Target audience
This course is for physiotherapists who want to learn more on the placebo and nocebo effects of their treatments and communication.
The placebo and nocebo effects are topics of great interest in the international clinical and scientific community. These effects result from the positive (placebo) or negative (nocebo) interactions between patients and various contextual factors in healthcare settings, influencing therapeutic outcomes.
Currently, the knowledge on these topics among different healthcare professionals (e.g., physiotherapists) is not deep, leading to clinical repercussions and reduced impact in enhancing patient therapeutic outcomes.
Learning objectives
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- Understand the placebo and nocebo effects and contextual factors, reflecting on psychological theories and neurobiological mechanisms underlying their function.
- Utilize key contextual factors during clinical reasoning and decision-making phases to ethically influence therapeutic outcomes, stimulating placebo effects, and reducing nocebo effects.
Content summary
Using an evidence-based approach and various teaching methods the theoretical-practical course aims to:
- Increase awareness of the role of placebo, nocebo effects, and contextual factors in physiotherapy practice.
- Guide clinicians in applying contextual factors to stimulate placebo effects, avoid nocebo effects, and influence patient outcomes.

Reasons to participate
This course addresses several questions clinicians face daily: "Why does a patient exhibit variability in therapeutic response?", "How can the therapeutic outcome be improved by fostering a stronger connection with the clinician?", and "How can the risk of losing a patient be reduced?".
After the training, participants will gain theoretical knowledge and practical skills immediately applicable in their clinical settings to stimulate placebo effects and limit nocebo effects through appropriate use of contextual factors.
